The Scaliger city, known as the site of the Romeo and Juliet tragedy, was declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO for its urban structure and architecture: Verona is a clear example of a city that has developed progressively and continuously during two thousand years, integrating the highest quality artistic elements of the different periods that followed; it also represents in an exceptional way the concept of fortified city in several decisive stages of European history. The Scaliger castle of Sirmione is an extraordinary example of a lake fortification and one of the most spectacular and best preserved Scaliger fortresses in Garda. Built after more than half of the fourteenth century, it takes its name from the Scala family who dominated Verona and its territory between the thirteenth and fourteenth centuries. A dock that belongs to the castle still encloses a small portion of the lake
